The Royal Street is a 5-bedroom buffet-lounge observation car built by Pullman in 1950 for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The car was part of an 8-car order between the L&N, Southern Railway, Atlanta & West Point Railroad, and New York Central System. The Royal Street was part of the L&N’s contribution of equipment used on the Crescent between New Orleans and New York City. It operated on the Crescent from 1950 to 1956 along with the sister car, The Royal Canal. Both were transferred to operate between New Orleans and Jacksonville on the Gulf Wind. The Royal Street was also used for several winter seasons in the late 1950s and early 60s by the Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line trains between Miami and New York City. When Amtrak was created by the federal government to overtake passenger trains in May of 1971, The Royal Street was sold into private ownership.
Over the years, the Royal Street has undergone an extensive restoration and has been certified by Amtrak to operate on their trains. The private car has an A Clearance – which means it can operate throughout the entire Amtrak system. The Royal Street is available for private charters and can accommodate up to 8 guests overnight. The classic passenger car features double occupancy bedrooms and can accomodate as many as 16 passengers on day trips. Dining service is offered to guests on overnight charters.
